October 20, 2010
This one will be shorter. Day isn't over yet, but I have low hopes for the rest of the day. Weather turned to shit a little this morning. I woke up to an overcast day, such a bummer. Diving was at 1230, so I headed out around noon. Got to the center and all dressed to find out that it was only me and one other girl, Andrea diving with a guide, Simon. The dive site is Julian Rocks. According to the guy I booked with, there is supposed to be heaps of wildlife out there. Sharks, sting rays, turtles, octopus, eels, and some other stuff. The reef was incredible, but my last dive I didn't really see much. It was beautiful; coral and fish, but no sharks or anything too exciting. This was a cheap dive, so I figured why not? Anyway, we get out to the island, like 10min off the coast and we're freaking cold. The water was a bit choppy and the visibility wasn't that great, but as soon as we got to the bottom we saw a HUGE sea turtle. The thing was easily 4ft in diameter. Almost the same size as the guide. Other than him, we didn't end up seeing much else. We saw another turtle, some "sharks", if you can call them that... they looked more like big cat fish. There was a small eel thing hiding in rocks. There was a cool fish; long and skinny and looked like a big rod, with a little pokey tail. The water was freezing. It was a cool dive though, worth the money, but not as beautiful as the reef. Got back to the hostel and now I'm just doing some laundry and putting pics online. I've been friendly with the roommates, but not friendly enough to hang out with them. Cool guys and girls from Germany (clearly... everyone is from Germany). Got a call from the surf camp. Looks like they want to leave a day early. Not sure specifics, she's meant to email me, but it shouldn't interfere with anything. Tomorrow is Nimbin. Fingers crossed for better weather. It can be overcast, just no rain. And it needs to be sunny on Friday.
